Frank Chodorov was an extraordinary thinker and writer, and hugely influential in the 1950s. In this classic work, he argues that the income tax, more than any other legislative change in American history, made it possible to violate individual rights.

He argues that income taxes are different from other forms of taxation because they deny the right of private property and presume government control over all things. The foreword is by former IRS commissioner J. Bracken Lee.

The reason this book is worthwhile is that it puts its finger on the fact that it is what finances the gross-spending habit of Congress and Presidents. If money were dear -- as it was in most years before 1913 -- our politicians would have to make decisions. The income tax amendment makes it all too legal and easy. It was interesting to understand that the first income tax provided much more income than anyone thought possible. Guess What! The spent it all, and have been doing so ever since. This is what finances all the illegal spending that is not covered by what the Constitution provides under the "spending clause" The "general welfare" that is written into the Constitution means spending for the benefit of all the people, not just some of the people. Canals, catastrophes, humanitarian efforts, et all do not fit the definition of benefiting all the people, they only benefit those directly involved in the results of canal-building, local fires, and so forth. If you think otherwise, read the vetoes written by all the presidents up to the Civil War that vetoed non-conforming legislation that the president held to be contrary to understanding of the general welfare. In particular read Andrew Jackson's veto of the National Bank. No president's veto was ever overridden by Congress. Eventually, the Supreme Court reinterpreted the meaning of the Constitution. This was a political decision, not a legal decision.

The Income Tax Root of All Evil eBook Frank Chodorov J Bracken Lee Reviews

Fabulous little book! Something everyone should read to see the possibilities that could help people if their efforts weren't taken from them. What a help to ALL people with more jobs, purchasing power and freedom.
I was very pleased about most of the content of this book. It reveals the turning point in American history where we went from a relatively free and open market and society to a centrally controlled, progressive, socialistic economy. My only disappointment was the complete avoidance of discussion of the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, which in my opinion was the major reason for preparing the way with the Income Tax just months before. Without the Income Tax, the Federal Reserve does not have the guarantees it needs to underwrite US, Federal Government Debt. And, without the ability to monetize it's debt the two parties do not have the liquidity to wage world wars, rebuild countries after the ravages of war, buy alliances worldwide through guaranteed loans, and expand Federal Government programs beyond the current savings/capital of the American people. It's a very clever and well hidden process to most Americans today, and virtually none of them realize the slow and steady process that's been at work for 100 years now to fundamentally "change" our free market system with small government to that of a progressive, socialistic system of control. It all started with the Income Tax and the Federal Reserve in 1912, 1913.

All of us are to blame for this disaster. Both major political parties have been the victims of this movement. Neither party today has the understanding of the root of the problem, and without this knowledge the solutions will only treat the symptoms. The result will be catastrophic to our country.
In 1913 the seed of social cancer was planted in the US Constitution; it took the form of the 16th amendment. It was deceptively approved by our states, due to efforts formulated by the Russian intellectuals influenced by Linen. The 16th amendment allows the federal gov to take private property from individual citizens; this is in direct defiance of the letter and intent of the founding Fathers. The outright astonishing fact is that the federal gov, under this amendment can take all of our property. This makes us slaves. The truth of a thesis is it ability to predict out come. This book was written in 1954, and it describes, in detail, the year 2015. God help us.
Chodorov writes then as if it were today. Easy to read and prophetic. This book goes long to show that taxes are not patriotic and how their power increases by the amount we allow our central authority to steal our property.
Great book not promoted by those in power because, well, control breeds control. It goes through the history and lies brought by the 16th amendment and the men who promoted it. Super book, not long and easy to understand Chodorov's writing is great.
This is a great first book to delve into liberty based writing. Highly recommend.
I had never even heard of Frank Chodorov before reading this book, but I am an instant fan. Other big name economists grab all the headlines Mises, Hayek, Rothbard, etc., but they are not nearly as enjoyable or easy to read. Chodorov writes with the simplicity, permanent relevance, and clarity of Bastiat, and that is the highest compliment I know how to give. Every American should read this to be shaken awake to the growing injustice to which we have become accustomed. Read this, I beg you.

"Who wants freedom? In the circumstances, those who put a value on freedom, who know that the loss of interest in freedom is the sure mark of national and individual decadence, are in deep despair. Many, too many, have resigned themselves to what they call the inevitable." Frank Chodorov
If only everyone would read this book. It explains clearly how the 16th amendment happened and how it has enabled the centralized government to control our lives and will inevitably destroy our country. It has allowed the politicians to start and perpetuate the Ponzi scheme called social security, and how all of the other lies that the unfunded 'entitlement" programs can be used to buy votes. The american people have become addicted to the all powerful federal government. This book lays it all out as clearly as it can be done.it is amazing how this author saw this picture so many years ago. Unfortunately, his warning has gone unheeded, and my greatest fear is that it will not be until it is too late to reverse. Our founders designed a constitution that would prevent this from occurring, but people like Lincoln,Wilson and Johnson have destroyed the original intent of those brilliant men who gave us a chance for freedom.
